Renegade Humor (2012)

Although best known for her paintings, Squeak Carnwath produced the ceramic sculpture Swim Meat (1973) while still in graduate school at the California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts) in Oakland. The title refers to three women who have gathered for a swim “meet” and to fish as a food or “meat.” The phrase further alludes to the chauvinistic male attitudes that dominated the field of ceramics during the 1970s and caused Carnwath to turn to painting. “Swim meat” now becomes “fresh meat”—a slang term for “newcomers” or “freshmen girls.”
