Frank Lobdell: Wonderland (2012)

The monumental painting 2.22.93-4.8.93 Bleeker exemplifies Frank Lobdell’s coalescence of space, form, and color. The geometric shapes that structured his work from the 1980s have now become integrated with the form of his characters that appear almost robotic. Lobdell used the shape of the painting to determine the overall composition by anchoring several poles, amorphous shapes, and characters to each edge of the canvas. In the interior of the composition are various signs balanced along an undulating red line that connects the two sides of the painting. Somewhat subdued colors produce a hazy, dreamlike space of imagination and play for Lobdell’s personal system of signs.

Collection Highlights (2002-2004)

Many artists, including Frank Lobdell, believe that giving titles to paintings eliminates the possibility for multiple interpretations. Instead, Lobdell’s title refers to a specific time period and the name of his Stanford University studio where he created this painting. Lobdell’s inclusion of animal-like imagery and geometric patterning reflect his interest in the Paleolithic cave paintings in Lascaux, France, and Anatolian kilim weaving motifs from the Middle East. A blood-red “lifeline” connects the various elements of the composition and directs the viewer from one symbol to the next.
