In 1966, Josef Albers clarified: “Color is the vehicle of my language. It is automatic. I am not paying tribute to the square. It is only the plate on which I serve my obsession with color.” From 1950 until his death in 1976, Albers used the shape of the square as the tool through which he explored relationships between colors. In his best-known series, “Homage to the Square,” a project comprising over one hundred paintings and prints, Albers painted four concentric squares of various values and hues to demonstrate how colors interact with each other. Albers concluded that the perception of a color is always dependent upon its context.

The sixteen lithographs that constitute the series “White Line Squares” use the compositional structure of “Homage to the Square,” except with three concentric squares instead of four. In White Line Squares XIII (1966-1970), the white-lined square inserted in the middle blue shade creates the illusion of a fourth color and thereby re-creates the structure of Albers’ earlier series.
