This sculpture is the only work in the exhibition that in its form directly refers to the vessel. Betty Woodman has had an astonishing career as a ceramics artist for more than sixty-five years. She has continued the tradition of the vessel form, but expanded it beyond its formal constraints. Woodman pieces together slabs imbued with a sense of movement, then uses the animated shapes as three-dimensional canvases for her expressive brushwork. In His/Her Vases—Young Lovers, the fluid patterns on the glazed surfaces of the vessels recall Japanese calligraphy. The two distinctive yet intrinsically related “his” and “her” elements explore the functionality of a vessel and offer a dynamic combination of painting and sculpture.
