Inside Out: Selections from the Permanent Collection (2004-2006)

The rolling, rural hillsides that figure prominently in Jack Stuppin’s paintings evoke the early twentieth century Midwestern landscapes of realist artist Grant Wood, yet Stuppin’s bucolic, patchwork fields abut the fog-shrouded Northern California coastline near his home in Sonoma County. Like many landscape artists, Stuppin has always painted en plein air—a term used to describe the technique of painting outdoors. Recently, however, Stuppin completed a series of oil paintings while working inside his Sebastapol studio. Painting indoors allowed him to create works of a much grander scale, and to revisit each painting several times in order to capture the essence of the radiant countryside. This painting represents Stuppin's typical faux-naïve style with its bright hues, simple forms, and exaggerated shapes.
