It's About Time: Celebrating 35 Years (2004-2005)

Red E (2003)reflects Robert Hudson’s recent focus on ceramic sculpture while incorporating many of the visual elements that have informed his work for many years. The nonfunctional bowl is decorated with tromp l’oeil tree branches that refer to the artist’s lifelong love of nature. An ambiguous canine head tops the sculpture; while a geometric grid—slightly bent out of shape— provides some semblance of order and a playful reference to the tradition of formalist abstraction, in which the artist was trained in the late 1950s.
