Real and HyperReal (2010)

Lawrence Gipe based this flawlessly executed painting on an image from a book titled London at Night, 1940. The surface quality of the painting—the gleaming finish, stylish presentation, and layers and layers of glazing—belies the grave subject matter. In fact, Gipe wanted to conjure the anxiety present during the onset of World War II. He says that the painting addresses the way photography—in contradiction to its celebrated documentary role—can just as easily further falsehoods. In this case, the aura of romance obscures the wanton threat. The word “possession,” which appears in a stylized red font at the bottom, suggests this desire is a societal weakness that may lead to political and social disintegration.
