Visual Politics: The Art of Engagement (2005-2006)

Manuel Ocampo’s painting — an indictment of man’s historical and ongoing abuses of power — incorporates a variety of symbols that challenge us to probe the controversial relationship between Christianity, the Spanish Inquisition, and the Holocaust. Overrun with demons, the setting might be interpreted as a Nazi concentration camp or a mission courtyard in a Spanish colony. Presiding over the scene, Christ is presented as both victim and victimizer. At once, Ocampo depicts Christ-the-man, sacrificed for all humanity, and the Last Judgment, when Christ punishes guilty souls. Is Christ weeping for the murders committed in His name? Ocampo asks more questions than he answers.

In allegorical terms, Ocampo’s painting could be compared to Pablo Picasso’s Guernica. In his portrayal of the Basque town’s destruction during the Spanish Civil War, Picasso created powerful symbols for the plight of his country, expressing what he described as an age of “brutality and darkness.”
