Real and HyperReal (2010)

Michael C. McMillen showcases his trompe l’oeil (fool the eye) ability, a skill he developed as a prop and miniature artist on such films as Blade Runner, 1982. In , McMillen fastidiously crafted a miniature world that investigates theatrical reality. This mixed-media installation is loosely based on the psychedelic headshops that the artist visited during his youth in the heyday of the 1960s counterculture. McMillen wrote:

The walls are festooned with posters of the period, images of pop icons, Dylan, Hendrix, Joplin, and concerts at the Fillmore. A miniature strobe light periodically flashes from the back of the interior, while the muted strains of Tim Buckley or The Grateful Dead are heard faintly through the viewing doors. Is there a slight whiff of patchouli to be noticed as one peers into the viewer?
