Renegade Humor (2012)
Peter VandenBerge’s humorous anthropomorphizing of the carrot parallels the frog caricatures of fellow artist David Gilhooly. Indeed, VandenBerge did for the carrot what Gilhooly had done for the frog: both artists irreverently immortalized their subjects in clay.
According to VandenBerge, his love affair with the root vegetable began when he and Gilhooly stopped by a San Francisco farmers’ market in 1968. “Struck by the forms,” for the next several years VandenBerge began to incorporate them into his work. While his sculptures share the satirical humor of Gilhooly’s frogs, VandenBerge’s works exhibit a highly refined elegance. Couple Watching Saturday Night Movie is an excellent example of the artist’s ability to achieve delicate modeling on very intimate scale.
