Inside Out: Selections from the Permanent Collection (2004-2006)

Catholic and Jewish heritages blend in this mysterious confessional painting. As Inez Storer tells it, she was raised Catholic, but "sensed something under the surface." Her parents were very secretive about their past, and both had been raised in Europe and had emigrated to this country alone.

One day, when she was around fifteen, she used a Yiddish accent at the dinner table. When her mother fled from the room in obvious distress, she turned to her father and asked, "Am I Jewish?" He answered "Yes, but you must never bring it up again." Only when her mother was dying many years later was she able to learn some scant details about her German-Jewish past.
