Elements of painting, sculpture, and theater play equal roles in Jo Whaley’s captivating images. Whaley’s work as a photographer evolved from being a set painter and scenic artist. Her studio resembles an elaborate prop shop of still life objects, backdrops, and lights, which she combines to construct dramatic tableaux for her photographs. Her Natura Morta series imitates specific historical paintings, while commenting on the destruction or distortion of nature by science and technology.
