Biography

Ellen Carey attended the Art Students’ League in New York City during the early 1970s. In 1975 she graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with her B.F.A. Later she attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, where she earned her M.F.A. in 1978. Her work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions at venues including the International Center for Photography, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Baltimore Museum of Art; and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Her work is included in the collections of several major institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. These would be the first works by Carey to enter SJMA’s permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2004)
