Biography

Watanabe was born in Sapporo, Japan in 1951.  After graduating from the Department of Photography at Nihon University, Tokyo, in 1975, he moved to Los Angeles and became involved in television production.  Watanabe eventually opened his own production company and earned a M.B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1993. In 2000 he closed the production company in order to devote himself entirely to photography.  His work is featured in many collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Houston Museum of Fine Arts; the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York; the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.  He has been a part of numerous solo and group exhibitions in the United States and Japan.  Books published about his photography include Love Point (2010); Suo Sarumawashi (2009); Ideology in Paradise (2008); and Veiled Observations and Reflections (2002).

This would be the twentieth photograph by Watanabe (and the twentieth photograph from the “San Jose Japantown” series) to enter SJMA’s permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2011)
