Biography

Ernest Briggs was born in 1923 in San Diego, CA. After leaving the U.S. Army, Briggs enrolled in the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design in San Francisco from 1946 to 1947. He continued to study painting at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (now the San Francisco Art Institute) from 1947 to 1951. Briggs moved to New York in 1953 and joined the second-generation New York avant-garde. He taught at the University of Florida, Pratt Institute, and Yale University Graduate School of Art and Architecture. The artist died in 1984 in New York. Briggs had numerous solo and group exhibitions at various venues including the Stable Gallery, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Oakland Museum, the Laguna Art Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. His work is held in the collections of the Oakland Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. This would be the first work by the artist to enter SJMA’s permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2006)
