Biography

Born in 1919 in Chicago, Illinois, Corbett’s family settled in the Bay Area in 1934. He attended the California School of Fine Arts from 1936-41 with Hassel Smith. Corbett lived and painted in New York City from 1944-45, where he met Ad Reinhardt. In 1946 he returned to San Francisco and joined the American Abstract Artists organization and began teaching at CSFA and the University of California, Berkeley. In 1950, Corbett moved into a house in Point Richmond with artists Robert McChesney, Hassel Smith, Mary Fuller and poet Weldon Kees. Here he entered into one of the most productive periods of his career. Corbett died in 1971 in Provincetown, Massachusetts.  [Bio from Juicy Paint Exhibition, input by R. Faust, 8/11/2010]
