Biography

George Abend was born in New York City in 1922. He attended the California School of Fine Arts from 1946 until 1952. He then studied at UC Berkeley, the Académie de la Grand Chaumière in Paris, and the University of Guadalajara in Mexico. He wqas active on the East Coast between 1962 and 1966, in Los Angeles between 1966 and 1969, and in Big Sur and Santa Cruz from 1969 until his death in 1976. His work is included in the collection of the Oakland Museum of California Art. This would be the first work by Abend to enter SJMA’s permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2005)
