Biography

Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut and now living in New York City, Jane Hammond attended Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts. She earned a B.A. in 1972 and the following year enrolled at Arizona State University, Tempe. In 1977, she received her M.F.A. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has exhibited widely throughout the United States including solo exhibitions at the Orlando Museum of Art, the Cincinnati Museum of Art, and the Honolulu Academy of Art. She has also been exhibited widely in group exhibitions at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the New Museum Contemporary Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her work is held in the permanent collections of prominent institutions including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Museo del Arte Contemporaneo, Mexico City, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. This will be the first work by Hammond to enter the permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2002)
