Biography

A painter, but also an actor seen on television shows or movies such as Mr. Mom, Roseanne, Mrs. Doubtfire, etc.

Martin Mull was born in 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. After spending the early years of his childhood in a small town in Northern Ohio, he moved with his family to New Canaan,
Connecticut. He later attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where he received his B.F.A. in 1965 and his M.F.A. in 1967. Upon enrolling in the Rhode Island School of Design, Mull intended to pursue a career in painting, but soon became interested in music, comedy, and theater as well. Mull has recorded several musical albums, performed at numerous comedy clubs, and appeared in various films and television shows, but despite his successes in show business, he identifies himself first and foremost as a visual artist. His paintings have been exhibited at various institutions including Greenville County Museum of Art, Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, Newport Harbor Art Museum, Krannert Museum of Art (University of Illinois), and Boston Institute of Contemporary Art. His work is in the permanent collections of Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angles County Museum of Art, Walker Art Center, Brooklyn Museum, Orange County Museum, and San Diego Museum of Art among others. This will be the first work by Martin Mull to enter the permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2002)
