Biography

Terry St. John was born in Sacramento in 1934.  He attended UC Berkeley as an undergraduate, and later studied with James Weeks at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco (now SFAI).  He received an M.F.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1966, and maintained a studio in Oakland for many years thereafter.  St. John has been the Chair of the Art Department at the College of Notre Dame, Belmont since 1990.  His work has been shown at a number of Bay Area institutions and galleries, including Contemporary Realist Gallery, San Francisco; Victor Fischer Galleries, Oakland; and Robert Mondavi Winery, Napa.  His most recent solo exhibition was held in 1999 at Hackett-Freedman Gallery, San Francisco.  St. John’s work is in the collections of the Oakland Museum of California; the City of San Francisco; Mills Gallery at Mills College, Oakland, and Exxon Corporation, Irving, Texas.  This is the first work by Terry St. John to enter the Museum’s collection.
