Biography

Born in Richmond, Virginia in 1903, Robert Gwathmey became an important participant in the Social Realist movement.  He was the first white American painter to depict the lives of rural African Americans in a dignified manner.  His paintings – which typically employ flattened space, vivid colors, and narrative – affirm African American identity and culture, while calling attention tot heir social and economic plights.
