Biography

Ruth Bernhard was born in Berlin, Germany in 1905. At the Akademie der Kunste, Berlin, she studied the history of art and typography before emigrating to New York in 1927 at the invitation of her father. After a brief stint as a photography assistant Bernhard began to work as a freelance commercial photographer. She met Edward Weston in 1935 and was thereafter compelled to explore photography as a creative art. She is a renowned Bay Area photographer whose work has been shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Oakland Museum of Art, and the San Jose Museum of Art among many others. Her photographs are included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, France, and the San Jose Museum of Art. There are currently five works by Bernhard in SJMA’s permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2004)
