Biography

Retired professor of Design and Textile Art at San Jose State University, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 18, 2010 at the Saratoga Retirement Community, just two months short of her 100th birthday. Born in Rochester, NY, Anna Ballarian was a beloved Bay Area artist and long-time resident of San Jose, CA. She authored Fabric Collage in 1976, was published in several national magazines, and received recognition in Who's Who in American Women. She was a founding member of The Montalvo Service Group, member of the Montalvo Literary Arts Committee, and advisor to the Montalvo Artist Residency Program. Anna's artwork has been shown in major galleries along the West Coast. She was a master of many mediums and continued to create astoundingly modern new work well into her 9th decade. Anna is survived by her loving nieces and nephews, cousins and many devoted friends and former students. At Anna's request there is no memorial service; however, we will all remember her dearly through her body of work, and the imprint she left on our lives.
