Biography

A native of Southern California, she gained an MA in Ceramics and an MFA in Plastic Arts at San Jose State University, where she later also lectured. Her specialisation was functional and sculptural forms, with emphasis on wheel-thrown shapes and salt-glazed stoneware and porcelain. Her work is best known for its celebration of the unique qualities of salt glazing, using surface texture and colour to enhance the character of the clay. She was also known for her lucid writing, including numerous articles for Ceramics Monthly and NCECA (National Council for Education for the Ceramic Arts) Journal. She had solo exhibitions at Masterworks Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand (1988) and at Monterey Peninsula College Art Gallery (1990). Sadly, Sandra Johnstone died from a cerebral hemorrhage in January 1991.
