Biography

Robert Hartman was born in Sharon, Pennsylvania in 1926. His art education included a B.F.A. and an M.A in 1952, from the University of Arizona, and studies at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. While Hartman’s initial approach to art instruction has been described as one of academic realism, by the time he arrived on the University of Nevada campus in 1958, he was following the call of abstract expressionism. His students became enthusiastically committed to exploring the tenets of the movement that was experiencing wide spread popularity in university painting classes across the country. A long-held love of flying resurfaced after Hartman left the University of Nevada in 1961; he had earned his flying license at 21 years of age. In 1969, now teaching at the University of California at Berkeley, he bought an airplane from which he began to make photographs of patterns and features in landscapes below. Over the years, Hartman has explored many approaches to incorporating aerial photography in his imagery, exhibiting his works widely. Retired from teaching, Hartman remains active in producing and exhibiting his aerial photographs.
