Biography

Born in 1946 in Ames, IA, John Buck was educated at Kansas City Art Institute and School of Design (B.F.A., 1968), Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting (1971), and University of California, Davis (M.F.A., 1972).  In 1980 he was awarded an Individual Artist Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts as well as the National Artists Award in the Visual Arts in 1984.  His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and included in notable collections at The Art Institute of Chicago; The Brooklyn Museum of Art; Denver Art Museum; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Milwaukee Art Museum; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Palm Springs Desert Museum, CA; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; San Jose Museum of Art; Seattle Art Museum; University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive; and Yale University Gallery, New Haven, CT.  Teaching positions include appointments at Gloucestershire College of Art and Design (Cheltenham, England, 1972-3), Sculpture Instructor, Humboldt State University (Arcata, CA, 1973-5), Summer Ceramics Instructor, Mira Costa College (Carlsbad, CA, 1975), and Assistant Professor, Sculpture, Montana State University (Bozeman, MT, 1976-90).  Buck currently resides in Bozeman, MT.
