Born in Benicia, California in 1930, Robert Arneson began cartooning during high school and contributed sports cartoons to the Benicia Herald from 1949 to 1952. In 1954 he graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC) with a B.A. He then taught at Menlo-Atherton High School. He took summer courses at San Jose State College, continued his studies at CCAC and eventually received a M.F.A. from Mills College in 1958. He began teaching at the University of California, Davis in 1962, where he established the ceramics program. He continued teaching at UC Davis until 1991. He died in 1992, thirty years after having been diagnosed with cancer. Arneson has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions at institutions including The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; the Oakland Museum of California Art; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the San Jose Museum of Art. His work is included in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; the Australia National Gallery, Canberra; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; and the San Jose Museum of Art, among others. This will be the second work by Arneson to enter SJMA’s permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2003)
