Biography

Steven Deo was trained as a painter but works primarily as a mixed-media and installation artist. He received his BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute and pursued post-graduate work at Purdue University in 1994. He studied with Edgar Heap of Birds at the University of Oklahoma from 1994-1996. Deo has exhibited his artwork at institutions throughout the United States, including: the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; the George Eastman House Museum, Rochester, NY; the Tucson Museum of Art, AZ; the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA; and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, CA. In December 2003, Deo was awarded the 5th place medal for sculpture at the Biennale Dell Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy. His work is featured in private and public collections across the U.S., including the Hood Museum of Art, Hanover, NH; Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, OH, National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C.; and the University of Oklahoma.
