Biography

Arthur Monroe was born in New York in 1935. He went to Cornell University and City College of New York. In addition, he studied painting at Pratt Institute, the Art Students League, and Hans Hoffman’s studio. Monroe traveled widely throughout South America, Africa, and Mexico before settling in San Francisco in the late 1950s, where he connected with the Beats. He now resides in Oakland. This would be the first work by the artist to enter SJMA’s permanent collection. (SJMA Collections Committee, 2006)
