Biography

Felter was born in Berkeley in 1945 and grew up in Oakland.  Susan's mother, June Felter, is a figurative painter who studied at the Oakland Art Institute from 1937-1940, California School of Arts and Crafts,1954-1958, and the San Francisco Art Institute from 1960-1961.  Susan Felter earned her M.F.A. from U.C.L.A. in 1971. Her experimental film "Pescados Vivos" won various awards in film festivals during the 70s. Since then, her photographs and computer art have been exhibited and published both in the U.S. and abroad. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1980, and is now an Associate Professor of Art, teaching photography and computer art at Santa Clara University.  This gift will compliment the two works by Felter (from her Circus series) currently in SJMA’s permanent collection. Susan Felter grew up in the Bay Area, receiving a BA in Psychology and Artfrom UC Berkeley, and an MFA in Motion Pictures from UCLA. Her film "Pescados Vivos" won awards in short-film festivals in the 1970s. In 1980 she received a Guggenheim Fellowship for her photo project “Rodeo Work.” After her next series, “Circus Work”, she became interested in digital techniques. Her current project is the digital montage series "Hunting and Gathering." Susan’s photographic art has been exhibited and published in the U.S. and abroad. She taught Photography at Santa Clara University from 1983 to 2010.
