Biography

rafa esparza (b. 1981, Los Angeles; lives and works in Los Angeles) holds a B.F.A from UCLA. rafa esparza is a multidisciplinary artist who uses site-specificity, materiality, and memory and as tools to expose the ideologies and power structures that shape history and social environments. Since 2014, he has been working with adobe-making—a skill learned from his father—mixing earth, hay, horse dung and water into sunbaked bricks, which he uses to build structures and pave floors as platforms for other artists. This charged material exemplifies indigenous ingenuity while gesturing to the fraught histories of settler colonialism. Through frequent collaboration with his brown, queer community, esparza’s work destabilizes artistic authority by focusing on those fighting erasure and gentrification, and, as he says, “browning the white cube.”
