Biography

Chie Fueki (b. 1973) was born in Yokohama, Japan, and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. She received her BFA from the Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota, Florida, and her MFA from Yale University.

Her intricate paintings show contemporary life in motion. Using acrylic paint, ink, and colored pencil on mulberry paper, she precisely cuts and collages painted paper on wood, and her work relies on this logic of bringing disparate elements together. Her influces include early Renaissance art, Japanse ukiyo-e art, Piero della Francesca and Philip Guston, decorative and folk elements, among other souces of inspiration. Bringing together multiple spatial configurations and perspective systems into a single painting, she suggests the possibility of a pluralistic future. Jarring and mosaic, her paintings evoke collisions of the cosmic and day-to-day.
