Biography

Born in McRoberts, Kentucky in 1930, Leedy earned his BFA in 1957 at Richmond Professional Institute, College of William and Mary (now Virginia Commonwealth University) and his MFA at Southern Illinois University in 1958. A friend and colleague of Peter Voulkos, Leedy has been grouped with Voulkos and artist Rudy Autio as part of the Montana clay revolution of the 1960s. The artist has received numerous awards and fellowships, including a Visual arts fellowship from the National Endowments of the arts in 1990. His work has been exhibited extensively at locations including the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, New York; the Oakland Museum of Art; the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His work is held in the collections of the Kansas City Art Institute, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Minnesota Museum of Art in St. Paul, and the Los Angeles County Musuem of Art, among others.
