2013 Winter-Spring Lunchtime Lecture Series

Take a lunch break with art and new ideas. At SJMA’s Lunchtime Lectures, you’ll hear from artists, creative thinkers, and experts on a range of topics in art, architecture, design, and more. Robert Flynn Johnson, curator emeritus of the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, will kick off our 2013 series January 2 with a lighthearted talk about myths of the art world. Lunchtime Lectures take place on the first Wednesday of the month at noon. Bring your lunch, or purchase from Café Too. Free with Museum admission. 

“The Private Collection of Dr. No and Other Myths of the Art World”

Robert Flynn Johnson will reveal some myths of the art world, such as the private collection of James Bond’s nemesis Dr. No.

“Contemporary Art in China”

Critic and independent curator Jeff Kelley, editor of a forthcoming book on the writings of the controversial artist Ai Weiwei, will share his perspectives on the contemporary art scene in China.

Eliza Barrios and Jenifer Wofford, two-thirds of the artist collective Mail Order Brides/M.O.B., will speak about their work, which is featured in upcoming exhibition New Stories from the Edge of Asia: This/That

“Ekphrasis: Making Connections with Poetry”

In honor of National Poetry Month, Sally Ashton will discuss the long history of ekphrasis (a response to one work of art through another medium) in Western literature. Ashton is editor-in-chief of the DMQ Review and teaches at San Jose State University (SJSU). 

Matta and the Post-Colonial Odyssey”

Apryl Berney, lecturer at De Anza Community College, Cupertino, California, and SJSU, will discuss Roberto Matta, whose work is featured in the upcoming exhibition Swans, Swine, and Sirens.

Lunchtime Lectures take place on the first Wednesday of the month at noon in the Charlotte Wendel Education Center. Visitors are welcome to bring food and beverages.
