Experience the Studio and Gallery of Abstract Artist Johnny Apodaca
Courtesy of the artist

Retail value: Priceless

After starting out as an Abstract Expressionist, Johnny Apodaca developed an interest in the coastal region of California. He made it his goal to “revisit the old tradition of landscape painting with new, contemporary sensibilities.” He turned to the tradition of plein-air painting, observing the scene directly and out-of-doors, but adding his individual style: combining bold color and techniques such as scumbling or layering a translucent pigment over darker underpainting to capture the nuances of gleaming light.

The winning bidder will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about plein-air painting with Apodaca in his seaside studio. As you look around the studio, you will see the hundreds of colorful paintbrushes which Apodaca keeps and displays, still caked with the colors he used, instead of washing and reusing. After a private tour of the studio, you and your guests (up to a total of six people) will enjoy a gourmet vegetarian lunch with the artist and his wife, Janelle, in their lovely garden. The day will close with a private viewing of the artist’s latest work in his gallery in Carmel, California. And the best part of the experience is still to come: the successful bidder will have the incredible opportunity to choose and take home a painting (from a selection of four works on display in the gallery). The visit will take place in spring 2013, after the Apodacas return from their annual trip to Italy.
