Robots: Evolution of a Cultural Icon
April 12, 2008 to October 19, 2008

Robots: Evolution of a Cultural Icon examines the development of robot iconography in fine art over the past 50 years. In 1920, the term robot was coined from a Czech word robota, which means tedious labor. Since then, the image and the idea of a robot have evolved remarkably from an awkward, mechanical creature to a sophisticated android with artificial intelligence and the potential for human-like consciousness. As robotic technology catches up with the wild imagination of science fiction novels, movies, and animation, dreams and fears anticipated in these stories may also become reality. Artists included in the exhibition have responded to the technological innovation with optimism, pessimism, and humor, presenting work that ultimately explores our ambivalent attitudes towards robots.

The lead exhibition of the 2nd Biennial 01SJ Global Festival of Art on the Edge features work ranging from printed leaflets to algorithmic films to kinetic sculptural installations. They collectively confound our expected question “What’s next?” with questions about technological progress and its consequences.

Kids Summer Art Camp 2008
July 28, 2008 to August 8, 2008

Join us for a week of fun and creativity at the museum this summer. These full-day camps offer in-depth art experiences for children ages 6-11. Led by Museum faculty and inspired by our current exhibitions, the Museum’s popular Summer Art Camps teach kids how to look at, talk about and create their own art. Campers participate in activities that are exhibition-based and balance visual inquiry and instruction of techniques and skills with encouragement and inspiration for self-expression. Participants grow creatively and strengthen their artistic capabilities while developing social communication and intellectual skills. Each camper will receive an art kit containing all the supplies they will need, and the camp culminates in a one-day public exhibition of student work.
